The Science: Amethyst is a variety of quartz (SiO₂). Its purple comes from iron and natural radiation in the crystal. It’s a 7 on the Mohs scale, tough enough for everyday wear.

Born in Cavities: Amethyst crystals grow inside cavities in volcanic rock as silica-rich fluids slowly deposit layers, over long geologic time. Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia are well-known sources.

Traditionally associated with calm, intuition and clarity. Amethyst is the February birthstone.
