The Science: Carnelian is chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. Its orange-red color comes from iron oxide. It’s a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

Born in Cavities: Silica-rich fluids slowly fill cavities in volcanic rock, layer by layer, over long geologic time. India, Brazil and Uruguay are well-known sources.
