The Science: Pink opal is common opal, a form of silica (SiO₂) that holds a little water inside it. Unlike most minerals, it has no crystal structure at all. It’s softer than tourmaline, about 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, with a smooth, waxy glow. The pink is often attributed to trace impurities.

Made by Water and Time: Opal forms when silica-rich water seeps into cracks and hollows in rock, slowly evaporates, and leaves silica gel behind that hardens over time. Natural opal is generally thought to take thousands to millions of years to form. Peru’s Andes are the best-known source of pink opal.
