The Science: Ruby is the red variety of corundum (aluminum oxide). Its color comes from chromium. It’s a 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond.

Forged in Rock: Rubies form in metamorphic rock such as marble, under heat and pressure, over long geologic time. Myanmar, Mozambique and Thailand are well-known sources.

Traditionally associated with love, confidence and vitality. Ruby is the July birthstone.
